What role does sustainability play in HafenCity?

HafenCity was designed from the beginning as a sustainable urban development project. Various levels intertwined in the process. In regard to city development sustainability has economic, social, cultural and ecological aspects.

When the HafenCity project began, center stage was given to sustainability topics such as how to go about rehabilitating a centrally located former port area where ground surfaces were partially contaminated (brownfield development); the question of whether housing and port operations could be compatible and how to create a fine-grained mix of uses in a new city where distances were short.

As planning progressed further, these were followed by an energy-efficient, climate-friendly heating supply and  the development of sustainable building certification. HafenCity’s Ecolabel has proven a great success within a very short time - leading the way in Germany. In the medium to long term, this means that HafenCity will play a significant role in helping Hamburg fulfill climate goals, thanks to its new sustainable infrastructure and built environment.

As a member of the Hamburg "Future Council", HafenCity Hamburg GmbH is part of a civil society organization whose objective is the long-term, sustainable development of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. HafenCity Hamburg GmbH is also a founding member of the German Sustainable Building Association (DGNB).
