What sports activities are available in HafenCity?
HafenCity invites many kinds of physical exercise or sports activity. The continually expanding network of pathways is already great for walking, jogging or cycling. For the most part, footpaths and cycling routes run on squares and walkways beside the water; they are among the most attractive in Hamburg.
Other kinds of sports that have a following in the new city district include skating: the skater crowd made the steps and ramps of the Magellan Terraces their own right from the start. A basketball court has been laid out in Vasco da Gama square and there is a boules pitch on Grosser Grasbrook. Children can let off steam and romp about in the Treasure Island playground, also on Grosser Grasbrook. A new sports hall has been built during construction of the Katharinenschule in Sandtorpark. It is being used, for example, by the Störtebeker SV sports club, HafenCity’s own, which began with a soccer group and now even has a fitness studio of its own.
As the green spaces in the planned parks develop (Grasbrookpark and notably Lohsepark) they will be provide room for a whole lot of different play, sport and exercise opportunities in coming years. Other innovative sports concepts are being implemented in Baakenhafen neighborhood. The Sandtorpark is already used by kids of the neighboring Katharinenschule school and daycare center as well as from residents and visitors.
