How are HafenCity’s businesses developing?
More than 270 companies had moved into HafenCity by fall 2010. And the number of jobs provided has almost doubled in the past two years. The new city district offers the best conditions for the location of small and medium-size as well as large enterprises.
According to the first findings of a report commissioned by HafenCity Hamburg GmbH, there were 43 per cent more companies in 2010 than in 2008: their number rose from 191 to 273, whilst jobs almost doubled to 6,000. The sectors represented are varied: services, shipping, construction, architecture, media and communication, retail and tourism.
Since 2006, large concerns such as logistics group Kühne + Nagel and container shipper China Shipping and NYK Line have become established. Two more global players, in the shape of Unilever and Germanischer Lloyd joined them in 2009/10, bringing 2,700 employees with them. The latest corporate addition was Neumann Kaffee Group in Sandtorpark; Spiegel Group moves into Ericusspitze in summer 2011.
It had already become clear by 2008 that HafenCity is an attractive location for smaller companies, many of them start-ups. The first neighborhood to be completed, Sandtorkai/Dalmannkai attracted mostly businesses with fewer than 50 employees. This structure has been reinforced in additional buildings such as DC Commercial in Sandtorpark which offers flexible and small-scale spaces from 150 sq.m available for rent from 2011. The design center designport, where construction got under way last year, will offer studios and showrooms for creative purposes.
Public access to ground floors of buildings is benefiting a lot of smaller businesses. With acquisition prices for the land kept low, the spaces with their five-meter-high ceilings offer spacious presentation areas for a growing clientele. Apart from established retailers, these spaces are popular with niche businesses and new launches.
