When will I be able to use the U4 and where will it stop?
The U4 will start operating in September 2012, initially at 10-minute intervals. The service is expected to carry some 23,000 passengers a day, right from the beginning. After HafenCity is completed, volume will rise to 35,000. On special occasions trains may run every 2½ minutes.
Inside HafenCity, both Überseequartier and HafenCity University stops are currently under construction. In the medium term, the U4 will also make "the leap over the Elbe" towards the south. Additional stations will then be built on the River Elbe islands, and passenger loads will increase commensurately.
The new U4 underground line will then be the main transport medium for HafenCity. It will link the new district seamlessly with the present-day city center: the journey from Jungfernstieg will take just three minutes. The U4 will also connect HafenCity to Hamburg’s most important local and long-distance transport hubs (Jungfernstieg as well as Central Station and Berliner Tor) and to the Billstedt district.
