Architectural competition for NIDUS joint building venture decided

The result of the competition to design the first privately initiated and organized joint building venture in HafenCity has been announced. This is the fifth joint building venture to get started in HafenCity.

"We see HafenCity as the perfect place to live", says initiator Jörg Münzinger. "We saw setting up a joint building venture as a chance to realize our dream of living and working under one roof. We hope that our concept for mixed uses - housing, creativity, art and culture - will create synergies between our residents and their surroundings in Elbtorquartier."

The NIDUS joint building venture is self-organized and has dispensed with the need for a construction supervisor or project developer. This means that they can make savings, so that the apartments built will cost between EUR 2,900 and 3,100 per square meter. The joint building venture plans to construct 30 units, each with ceilings of up to five meters. The layout is open-plan and designed flexibly for use by single person households as well as families. The ground floor, with its shops, studios and showrooms, will make a strong impression on the character of Shanghaiallee. As well as a gallery, NIDUS is also planning shop/apartments, which are sure to attract a lot of public interest in busy Elbtorquartier quarter.

The design, by spine architects, is inspired by New York loft architecture but echoes the traditions of the Speicherstadt, through its use of materials and detail. The red-brick façade with floor to ceiling windows gives occupiers generous views over the urbane bustle of Shanghaiallee. The southwest façade, by contrast, which looks over the quiet, planted inner courtyard, is airy, with a huge area of glass, which ensures that apartments get plenty of light. Loggias invite residents to sit in the sun. The courtyard will be a green oasis with a shared garden for its residents - in the heart of the city.
