Topping-out celebration of the Elbphilharmonie

On 28 and 29 May Hamburg presented its new cultural landmark – the Elbphilharmonie. The Plaza on the 8th floor opened to the public for the first time. The day before, 1.200 invited guests celebrated the traditional topping-out ceremony

The Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s stunning new concert hall, has been presented to the people of Hamburg and their guests on 28 and 29 May 2010 at an official topping-out ceremony accompanied by a weekend of celebrations. Over these two days, more than 5.000 visitors – including many members of the national and international press – had the chance to gain first-hand experience of the spectacular building designed by the Swiss architectural team Herzog & de Meuron.

During this special weekend, the doors to Hamburg’s most complex building site have been opened. Senator Karin von Welck said: "I am delighted that we, along with the people of Hamburg, can now celebrate the ‘topping-out’ of the Elbphilharmonie, marking a major milestone in its construction. All 4.000 tickets for Plaza Day were snapped up within a matter of hours: this huge demand shows just how keen the people of Hamburg are to find out more about the Elbphilharmonie, and how much they are looking forward to its inauguration."

The weekend of celebrations got underway on Friday, 28 May with the traditional topping-out ceremony, which was attended by all partners who have been involved in the building’s development along with a number of Hamburg citizens. The first musical highlight was an open-air concert on the Marco Polo Terraces on Friday evening, starring the Portuguese fado queen Mariza and the NDR Bigband feat. Trilok Gurtu & Simon Phillips.
