Baakenpark opens

Nearly 25,000 visitors celebrated the opening of Baakenpark on May 5–6 in perfect weather. Sporting activities and swing dancing were on offer along with a neighborhood picnic. Promotional stands, tours and atmospheric concerts completed the program. The playground and sports equipment were particularly popular. The focus was on Baakenpark as a green, social center in eastern HafenCity

Baakenpark is a 1.6 ha artificial promontory in the harbor basin and forms the topographical center of Baakenhafen neighborhood. The green space acts as a recreational area, and Baakenpark is itself an esthetic eye-catcher.

Baakenpark links the northern and southern sides of the neighborhood, while around it an urban village is taking shape in the heart of the city. A residential and leisure district, sustainable and socially mixed, is coming into being on both sides of HafenCity’s longest harbor basin. During the opening celebrations visitors were able to enjoy the HafenCity panorama from the top of “Himmelsberg”. Local residents in particular were delighted by the urban village taking shape on their doorsteps. “The view’s really stunning,” said one woman. “Since we live here, it’s clearly a real gain,” added an older man. There was also a round table where residents had the chance to chat to Hamburg’s mayor, Dr Peter Tschentscher, and to Prof. Jürgen Bruns-Berentelg.

Baakenpark’s role as a green, social center in eastern HafenCity was the main topic here. Visitors gave their own opinions on Baakenpark’s landscape architecture and were listened to attentively.
