Green and metropolitan at the same time - this is the face of the HafenCity in Hamburg as the European Green Capital 2011, that is presented at the EXPO REAL fair. With an abundance of realized construction projects and project plans, Hamburg's newest district is positioned in multiple respects as a sustainable urban development project.

In the fall of 2011, the Unilever headquarters for German-speaking countries on Strandkai will be the first building in HafenCity to be awarded the HafenCity Ecolabel in gold, the most prestigious label for sustainable construction in the country. An additional 305,000 square meters of gross floor area have been pre-certified or bindingly registered for this distinction.  The most recent project to apply for the Ecolabel is the Sumatra-Kontor building in the Überseequartier. With the further growth of HafenCity from west to east and north to south, the HafenCity Ecolabel will continue to provide incentive for innovations in order to construct buildings in a more energy efficient and resource-preserving manner. Required by corresponding property tenders, the share of gold-certified building in the central and eastern quarters will achieve at least 50 percent and the share of residential buildings will presumably reach 100 percent.

All in all, HafenCity will become greener and greener. After the opening of the Sandtorpark in April of 2011, the first section of the central Lohsepark will be created starting in 2013 on an area of four hectares. Framed by two harbor basins, the southern end of this central park is a 20 meter wide and more than one kilometer long green area on the banks of the Elbe. New paths and open spaces, such as the promenade around the Magdeburger Hafen create highly functional areas with welcoming qualities.

The sustainability strategy of HafenCity encompasses much more than green areas and sustainable buildings: The dense, sophisticated mixture of uses, the promotion of sustainable mobility - such as the connection to the U4 line of the subway planned for the end of 2012 - with bicycle lanes, a new hydrogen fueling station for buses and a thorough network of footpaths set new standards for the future. This also includes the innovative heating supply, especially in the eastern part of HafenCity, with an extremely low CO2 index of 89 g/kWh and the use of primarily renewable energy sources. Jürgen Bruns-Berentelg, Chairman of the Executive Board of HafenCity Hamburg GmbH had this to say: "Despite the large amount of remaining development tasks which are scheduled for the coming 15 years, HafenCity has already set outstanding international standards for large-scale waterfront and city projects today with its excellent urban and sustainable qualities."

Eleven years after the conclusion of the HafenCity master plan, all of the tracks have been laid for the success of the project. Some 1,700 people are already living here (in the future this will grow to 12,000); and about 8,400 employees are already working in some 300 different companies. With the quarters Am Sandtorpark / Grasbrook and Brooktorkai / Ericusspitze, where the Spiegel Group moved into its new publishing building in September, a total of three quarters have now been completed - and with them the entire northern section of HafenCity which borders downtown Hamburg.

Important construction projects are currently being pursued in the central section of HafenCity: Ground was broken for the southern Überseequartier in the spring of 2011. Amongst others projects within Magdeburger Hafen, the Elbtorquartier is under construction, where the German headquarters of Greenpeace, Designport and apartments will be located.  HafenCity University will be built in the direct vicinity of the latter. Structural engineering in the quarter Am Lohsepark will commence in 2012 - mixed used buildings are currently being constructed on two plots with approximately 300 residential units and an additional kindergarten.

The urban design competition for the Baakenhafen quarter in the eastern section of HafenCity was concluded in September of 2011. With two waterfronts and a bridge which will be completed by 2013, this quarter has an especially attractive design. The first plots here will be tendered in the third quarter of 2012. A total of 383,000 GFA will be available here - amongst other uses, for 1,800 apartments as well as for offices, bars and restaurants, retail, leisure facilities and schools.

We look forward to your visit at the EXPO REAL Hamburg-Location B2.430
