Entries now open: HafenCity Run 2022

01.03.2022
It may not be a marathon, but it is still a very special running experience: The HafenCity Run is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. A sports event well known beyond the Hamburg city boundaries, its appeal is a route that takes runners right through HafenCity, by well-known sights and past building sites, and through new, hitherto unknown areas. Instead of chasing performance and the best time, team spirit, fun and discovering HafenCity are at the forefront here. Entries for the popular charitable sports event, which takes place on Saturday, June 18, 2022, are now open.
The unusual concept is already obvious during registration: participation is not open to individuals, instead you need to be a team of at least 10 people. Teams often take part with specially printed sportswear, so that spectators and participants can immediately see who is running. As many groups are made up of people who have met at work, the run is always a bit of a “Who’s Who” of north German companies large and small and from a wide variety of sectors. But sports clubs, sports groups and just groups of friends can quite as easily take part.

Everything is done to prevent the kind of performance pressure you get at a marathon: There is no timekeeping, and start times are spread throughout the day. This leaves the mind free to enjoy the many impressions of the largely completed HafenCity and its waterfront locations and views.

A note on the route: it is being specially reworked for the anniversary. In the 20 years since the run began, HafenCity has developed rapidly. It has grown over the period from the Speicherstadt southwards to the Elbe and eastwards to the Elbe bridges. There, with projects such as the Westfield-Überseequartier shopping center and the Elbtower at the eastern end of Elbbrücken Quarter, the last major projects are currently under way, while on the other bank of the Elbe, at Kleiner Grasbrook, the next major urban development initiative has already begun. The new route, as yet undetermined, will also have something new in store for old hands.

And as if this were not enough reason to take part, a share of the proceeds goes to a charitable cause. The money will go to “Abendblatt hilft e.V.”, which has to date raised about 1.85 million euros to help children from less well-off families get involved in sports clubs. In future it will also support activities for children and young people in areas such as culture and education.

The HafenCity Run 2022 will take place on Saturday, June 18 from 9 a.m. onwards. Groups of at least 10 people can register immediately on the
https://www.hafencityrun.de website. The start and finishing line and the course of the 4 km route will be announced at a later date.
