Platz Strandhöft

Information/Terms of use

Strandkai (Beach Quay) Quarter

An area of attractive apartments, offices and cultural and leisure uses is being created on Strandkai with a direct link to the Elbe River. With buildings up to 60 meters high, Strandkai quarter will shape the unmistakable face of HafenCity towards the Elbe. The striking Strandkai tip is surrounded by public promenades, the Hübenerkai and Strandkai, which lead to the large green area, Platz Strandhöft. This square is situated directly at the tip of the quay, with a sweeping view over the Elbe River, the harbor and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. It remains free of buildings and serves as a special public meeting place.

The beach quay tip and promenades

With the Strandhöft and the adjoining promenades, a meeting and adventure space has been created that can be used and enjoyed in a variety of ways. The barrier-free, rising ground level allows visitors to enjoy the unique panoramic view of the harbor, the ferry terminal and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. During the planning phase, deliberate attention was paid to creating different uses and atmospheres. Thus, a stage with a surrounding grandstand was built, which can be used for planned and spontaneous events. The lighting concept allows precise control of the illuminated columns. In the center of the square, the rising green area with shade trees invites people to linger. Wooden platforms with seating and lounging areas are located in various places. The area is shaped by the linear layout of the historic harbor basin and along the crane rails on the Strandkai promenade side, the old harbor cranes mark the history of the former free port.

The historic Strandhöft

As the port grew, warehouses were built along the current promenade areas to handle goods. For this purpose, the shape of the Strandhafen was excavated in the 1880s and the Strandkai and Hübenerkai quays were built. While the remaining portion of the former free port was primarily used as a transshipment point for goods, the first handling halls for emigrants with scheduled voyages to New York were also built here. A relocation to the emigrant town of Veddel followed at the beginning of the 20th century. With the introduction of containers in the 1960s, port handling was shifted to the south side of the Elbe. This also changed the image and significance of the waterfront. The Strandkai was initially still used for the storage of goods, but later became part of the HafenCity development.
